A control systems engineer is involved in the design and manufacturing of instrumentation and the control of dynamic processes. These engineers have to be knowledgeable about different technologies, such as electrical, mechanical and chemical, and are responsible for the overall safety and efficient running of the system [source: NSPE]. To become a control systems engineer you must have a strong knowledge of engineering, as well as managerial skills. This requires formal education and work experience in engineering, mathematics and sciences [source: BLS]. Here is an overview of how to become a control systems engineer.

  1. Earn a bachelor's degree in engineering. This will include coursework in general engineering, such as electrical, mechanical and civil engineering. It's also essential that you have a computer science background.
  2. Earn a master's degree in some engineering specialty. Managerial candidates often earn a master's degree in engineering management.
  3. Get licensed as a professional engineer (PE). This is required in every state [source: BLS].
  4. Earn a doctorate degree in the field of engineering you want to manage.
  5. Gain working experience in your field. You can do this while completing your post-graduate studies. Remember, people only become a control systems engineer after they have years of practical experience working in the field.
