Let's practice using subtraction number families. For this activity, you'll use a piece of construction paper, a pair of scissors, a marker, and a sharpened pencil or ballpoint pen.
Let's start by folding the paper into eight equal parts. Next, cut the paper into those eight separate parts. Then use the marker to number each part from 1 to 8. Place the pen horizontally on top of your desk. Make sure the tip points to the right. Take out the sheet that is numbered 8 and place it at the tip of the pen. Place the number 6 sheet above the pen. It will look like this:

Can you guess what the missing number is? Is it a lesser (smaller) number or a greater (larger) number? Say your answer out loud. Then pick out the sheet number that represents your answer and place it beside the number 6 sheet.
If your answer is "the lesser number is missing," you're right. You already have one lesser number and the greater number. Which number sheet belongs next to the 6? Correct. You should place your 2 next to the 6. Your number family will look like this:

Wasn't that fun? You can use your number sheets to practice using other number families.
