Let's practice subtracting numbers with the digit zero. For this activity, you will need a piece of paper, 18 index cards, and 2 markers that are different colors. Take out 9 index cards and copy each of following numbers onto an index card, one number on each card:

Shuffle the cards and place the stack upside down on your right side. Then take the remaining 9 index cards and write the numbers 1 to 9 on each card, one number on each card. Shuffle the cards and place the stack upside down on your left side. Pick out one card from the deck to your right and look at the number. Copy this number onto the paper. Now pick out one card from the deck to your left and look at the number. Copy it below the first number you wrote to make a column subtraction problem. Then put a minus sign and equal bar. For example, if you chose 500 and 4, your column problem should look like this:

Start solving the pro­blem using the marker. Use a different color from the one you wrote the problem with. If we solve the example above, your answer will look like this:

You can keep on shuffling the cards and picking out different combinations to solve until you have mastered subtracting numbers with the digit zero.
