Place value shows the value of a digit in the number. The smallest unit of place value in a whole number is called the ones place, and all the numbers from 1 to 9 have a ones value. The next place values is the tens place, and all whole numbers greater than 9 have a tens value. (You will sometimes see the terms "ones column" and "tens column" used.)
Place value addition can be used to rewrite two-digit whole numbers. We will write the numbers as a tens number plus a ones number. That way we can use place value addition to see what numbers can be used to form a two-digit number.
For example, with the number 28, place value addition tell us we have 2 tens = 20 and 8 ones = 8. 20 plus 8 (20 + 8), or 28.

Now let's try this using 93. First, we find the digit in the tens column, which is 9. You have 9 tens, which equal 90.

Then we add the number in the ones place, which is 3. You have 3 ones, which equal 3. We get this sum:
