We often use a picture to better understand a fraction. Now that we know about fractions, you're ready to learn how to identify a fraction just by looking at a picture. Look at this picture:

There are 4 equal parts in this circle. So the bottom number (denominator) of the fraction is 4. Three of the parts are shaded blue, so the top number (numerator) of the fraction is 3. The fraction is written as

Look at the picture below and see if you can identify the fraction yourself. Remember, the bottom number tells how many equal parts are in the whole. The top number tells how many of those parts are shaded.
