You know that
is a fraction less than one whole. You know
of a dollar equals 25 cents, but
of an hour equals 15 minutes. In this activity you will compare fractions that represent numbers that are less than one whole.
You will need ten index cards, a black marker, crayons, and a pencil. Take five index cards. On each card, draw 12, 24, 50, 75, or 100 circles. On the first index card, draw 12 circles; on the second index card, draw 24 circles, and so on. You should have five index cards, each with a different number of circles. Now use the other five index cards to create a second set.
Take the first set of cards. On each card, color
of the circles blue. On the back of the card, write an equation. For example, on the index card with 12 circles, write "
of 12 = 6." Continue with the rest of the index cards.
Now take your second set of cards. Color
of the circles red on the index cards with 12, 24, and 75 circles. Write an equation on the back of the cards. Then color
of the circles yellow on the index cards with 50, 75, and 100 circles. Be sure to write your equations on those cards as well.
Once you have completed writing fractions, compare the fractions of a set. For example, is
of 24 greater than or less than
of 75?
