Let's practice with fractions of whole numbers. You'll need eight sheets of white construction paper, some index cards, and eight markers of different colors. Use a marker to divide each sheet of paper into eight equal squares. Use a different color for each sheet of paper. When you're done, each sheet should look like this:

Now each whole sheet of paper has eight parts. Place the sheets of paper in a line on a table. How many sheets of paper equal ? How many sheets of paper equal ?

Take eight blank index cards and write the following fractions on them:

Now shuffle the cards and place the stack upside down. Draw a card from the stack. With a black marker, shade in the correct number of squares to match the fraction on the card. If you draw a fraction that is equal to a whole number, remove the correct number of sheets from the table. So if you draw , how many sheets of paper should you remove from the table?
