Do you still remember how many zeros a tens number has? How about a hundreds number? A tens number always has one zero, while a hundreds number has two. Why don't we try putting tens and hundreds numbers in place value charts?

A place value chart looks like this:

Now let's fill in the chart with digits. We'll start with a tens number. How do you write 4 tens in a place value chart? Since a tens number has one zero, you write the digit 4 in the tens place and a zero in the ones place. (You will sometimes see the terms "ones column" and "tens column" used.) Take a look at 4 tens in the place value chart below.

division problem

We read this number as "forty."

Let's try another example. How do you write 56 tens? It's not as tough as you think. Remember, a tens number has one zero. First, put one zero in the ones place. You can't put the 56 together in the tens place. The ones digit of the number will go in the tens place. Where does the other digit go? The other digit goes in the hundreds place (hundreds column).

division problem

You read this number as "five hundred sixty."

Are you feeling up to another one? How do you write 9 hundreds in the place value chart? A hundreds number has two zeros. Check out the place value chart below:

We say this number as "nine hundred."

Let's take it one step further. How do we write 78 hundreds? Always write the ones digit of the number so that it is written in the hundreds place.

You read this number as "seven thousand eight hundred."
