Let's work these division problems.
You'll notice that some digits in the dividend, or the number being divided, are underlined. In some problems, the first two digits of the greater number (larger number) are underlined. In other problems, only the hundreds digit is underlined. When there is an underlined digit in the dividend, you divide it by the lesser (smaller) number.
What is the division problem for the example above? The underlined number is 12, so we say that the division problem is 12 divided by 3. What is the answer? The answer equals 4 (12 ÷ 3 = 4). Write 4 above the tens digit in the dividend. It will look like this:
The ones digit is 9, and we divide it by the lesser number. So 9 divided by 3 equals 3 (9 ÷ 3 = 3). Write a 3 above the 9 in the ones place.
The quotient, or answer, equals 43.
In the example below, the underlined digit is 4. The division problem becomes 4 divided by 4, which equals 1 (4 ÷ 4 = 1). We place the 1 above the 4 in the hundreds place.
We go to the tens digit, which is 8, in the dividend. Dividing by the lesser number, we get 2. Let's place a 2 above the 8 in the tens place.
Our ones digit is zero. Remember the rule about zero? Any number divided by zero equals zero. Write a zero above the zero in the ones place.
Our quotient equals 120.
In this next example, the underlined digit is 14. So we divide 14 by 2 and get 7 (14 ÷ 2 = 7). Write 7 above the tens digit of the dividend, 144.
Then divide the ones digit, 4, by 2, which equals 2 (4 ÷ 2 = 2). Write a 2 above the 4 in the ones place.
The quotient equals 72.
