For this activity you will need 10 pieces of clean art paper, a notebook, a pen, clear tape, two dice, and a pack of any assorted candies. You can use some other hard substance like beans or rocks instead of candies.

Fold the art papers into big paper boats until you have 6 paper boats. This is easy to do. Fold up four sides of your paper and tape the corners. Your boat is just a rectangle with walls! The last piece of art paper will remain unfolded. It will become the launching pad.

Open the assorted candies. These candies will become the passengers. Roll the dice to find the number of passengers who need to launch. Say you roll a 12. Take 12 candies and put them on your launching pad. How many boats will you need? Roll one die to find the number of boats. Say you roll a 2.

You have 12 passengers and 2 boats. How many passengers will ride in each boat? You know 12 divided by 2 equals 6 (12 ÷ 2 = 6). Write this division problem on your notebook paper. Now place 6 candies in 2 boats. Your passengers are ready to go!

Keep rolling the dice to create new problems. You can roll the dice two or three times to come up with greater numbers. Say you roll an 8, a 9, and then a 4. You will have 21 passengers altogether.

You might not always be able to divide the numbers you roll. Say you roll 21 passengers and then roll 5 boats. After you put 4 people in 5 boats, 1 passenger will be left. You'll have 1 passenger as a remainder. That passenger will need his own boat. Be sure to write R1 on your notebook paper for this equation.
