Now that you've learned how to read decimal numbers, let's learn how to write decimal numbers.

When you write decimal numbers, make sure that the last digit of the number is in the place value that is named. Let's say your teacher asked you to write "four tenths." How do we write it?

First, we start with the number, which is 4. This is followed by "tenths," so we have to make sure that the last digit is in the tenths place. This is how we write it:

math problem

Four tenths is .4.

What if we have to write "four hundredths"? Again, we start with the number 4. Then we make sure that 4 is in the hundredths place by placing a zero in the tenths place.

math problem

Four hundredths is .04.

Now let's write "fourteen thousandths." What is the last digit in the number? The last digit is 4, so we place 4 in the thousandths place and 1 beside it in the hundredths place. Then we add zero in the tenths place. This is what it looks like:

math problem

Fourteen thousandths is .014. It's simple, isn't it? Just remember that when you write decimal numbers, make sure that the last digit of the number is in the place value that is named.
