You already know how to divide and write the remainder of a division problem as a fraction.

math problem

How did we get math problemas the remainder for the problem above? When we divide 8 by 5 (8 ÷ 5), 5 goes into 8 one time and there's 3 left over. That's math problem.

Instead of writing the remainder as a fraction, we can write it as a decimal number. How do we do that?

Let's look at our example above. It's 8 divided by 5:

math problem

First, we put a decimal point after the 8. Then we put a decimal point in the answer right above the other decimal point. We can add zeros to the 8 without changing its value. Your problem will look like this:

math problem

Now we divide. Five goes into 8 one time. We write 1 above the 8. We subtract 5 from 8 and get 3 left over (8 - 5 = 3). Bring down a zero. Five goes into 30 six times. There is no remainder, so we can stop. We don't have to use the other zeros to keep dividing. As soon as we have no remainder, we can stop. The answer is 1 and 6 hundredths. That's the same value as math problem! The fraction and the decimal number are equal.

Now, that's really simple!
