By now, you've probably worked a few column addition problems that involved carrying or regrouping. The digit you carry or regroup is usually a 1. But what if you're carrying a number greater than 1?

When we add, we sometimes get a two-digit sum for the digits in the ones place that is greater than 19. It may be a twenties or thirties number. Don't worry-this works in the same way. Just remember the rule: if it's a two-digit sum (answer), carry the tens digit to the place valueto the left.

Take a look at this example:

258

406

+ 319

When we add the digits in the ones place (ones column), 8 + 6 + 9, the sum equals 23. What's the tens digit in 23? The digit is 2. What's the ones digit in 23? It is 3. So we write a 3 at the bottom of the ones place and carry or regroup a 2 to the top of the tens place (tens column).

406

3

Now we can solve the rest of the problem in the usual way. We add the digits in the tens place. What's 2 + 5 + 0 + 1? It's 8. Write an 8 in the tens place. Then we add the digits in the hundreds place (hundreds column). What's 2 + 4 + 3? It's 9. The answer to our problem is 983.
