You may not think about numbers all the time. But almost everything around us can be described using numbers. That includes you and all the people you know. We use numbers to describe people's height, weight, and other features. One of the most common uses for numbers is when we talk about age.

In this activity, you will use column addition to add your age to the ages of your friends or family members.

Here's what to do:

1. Write down your name on a piece of paper. Next to your name, write your age.

2. List three of your friends or family members and their ages.

3. Use column addition to add your age to the first person on your list. What is the sum of your age and the first person's age?

4. Add your age to the second person on your list. What is the sum of your age and the next person's age?

5. Add your age to the third person on your list. What is the sum of your age and the third person's age?

6. Lastly, use column addition to add all four ages together. What is the sum of all the ages added together? Are you surprised by this number?
