Remember that number families are groups of numbers that are related to each other. Let's practice using number families by rolling dice.
1. Roll a pair of dice. Write down the two numbers you roll. These will be the lesser numbers in your number family. (Make sure the two numbers you roll are not equal. If they are, roll again.)
2. Using these two lesser (smaller) numbers, figure out the greatest (larger) number by adding the two lesser numbers. Write the greatest number next to the other two.
3. On a separate sheet of paper, write four facts of this number family. Remember, this will include two addition facts and two subtraction facts.
4. Now erase one number from each of the number sentences you just wrote. Then give your paper to a friend or classmate. Have him or her try to fill in the missing numbers.
