Being able to do addition quickly makes learning math easier and faster. Here is a fun way to practice adding greater numbers (larger numbers) when you are riding in the car.

First, find two license plates with at least four digits. More is better! Ignore any letters in the license plate.

Next, write a column addition problem using these two numbers. Now you can find the answer.

For example, if you see the license plates 282-158 and BG 4265, you will write an addition problem that looks like this:

282158

+ 4265

Remember that when you do column addition, you add the digits in each place value one at a time, starting in the ones place (ones column) and working your way to the left.

You may find it helpful to say each part of the addition problem out loud as you work. For instance, "In the ones place, I have 8 plus 5. Eight plus five equals 13. I write the 3 in the ones place and regroup, or carry, the 1 to the tens place (tens column). Now, in the tens place, I have . . ."

When you are finished, have a parent or adult check your work.

You can play this game whenever you are in the car. Remember, practice makes perfect!
