I'd bet it's safe to say that you, no matter who you are, have felt some effects of the recession. At this point, I think we all have. Most people I know, and yes, this includes myself, are struggling. And people can only struggle so much before they start getting...well...depressed.

The unfortunate thing about depression is that it's pretty counteractive to production. The more we let ourselves wallow in pity over jobs and money lost, the more time we wind up spending wallowing instead of producing. Certain industries always boom during a recession and it's not at all uncommon for a recession-depressed person to spend more time at movie theaters, eat nonsense food, and consume more alcohol. But none of these solutions are real solutions. If anything, they just contribute more so to the problem. No one feels good after bingeing on ice cream, waking up hungover, or having spent money for bills on entertainment. And none of those practices are great for the environment.

If you're recession-depressed, I challenge you to try to mend your mood more naturally. Focus your time and energy on habits that will actually have a positive effect on your mood and you'll save money and resources while actually feeling happier—despite circumstances.

Natural ways to fight your depression:

1. Drink more yerba mate instead of coffee.

2. Cut back on your liquor.

3. Meditate.

4. Do yoga.

5. Go for a 30 minute walk.

6. Get more lighting in your home—naturally if you can.

7. Surround yourself with plants.

8. Eat more bananas.

9. Spend time in the sun.

10. Have fun cooking food you can afford.
